I met with Sean at our spot in the park a couple of mornings later. But this time was different. I had been the one to schedule the chat because I needed to discuss something with him.

He grinned, handing me a bag and an iced coffee. “Here you go.”

I sipped my iced coffee before opening the bag. An Apple Fritter was inside it. “That was kind of you.”

Sean snickered. “I wouldn’t want you to think I was cheap.”

“I’d never think that. As for Uncle Steven, I don’t think the same thing can be said for him.”

“What did you want to talk about?” He undid the flap of the coffee lid, allowing the steam to ooze off the cup. He cooled it off by blowing the coffee before taking a sip.

I swallowed the uneasy feeling in my throat. “I know you’re investigating my mom’s murder, but would it be okay if this was off the record?”

He nodded. “Of course. I wouldn’t want you to do anything that would make you uncomfortable.”

“What should a person do if they might have discovered potential evidence in a crime?”

Sean frowned. “Are you sure that this is a hypothetical situation?”

“I guess I’ve been watching too much television.”

He finished his beverage, then tossed it into the adjacent garbage can. “No, I don’t think so. You don’t strike me as dumb.”

I averted my attention to the ground, noticing the coating of frost. It had been unseasonably cold the previous evening, dipping below thirty degrees.

“It’s not a big piece of evidence. It’s just something that might link the victim to someone.”

“Are you talking about your family? If there’s something you need to tell me, then don’t be afraid. I can protect you.”

“I don’t need a guy to help me,” I spat out. “I need an answer.”

Not wanting a guy to protect me had nothing to do with feminist philosophy. I’d say the same thing if a girl offered me help—although my attitude might make me seem stubborn, because there wasn’t anything wrong with accepting help.

Sean exhaled a long breath. “I’d advise the person to tell the police about it and to turn in the evidence.”

I bit my lip. “Thanks for being honest.”

“I understand you not wanting to tell the truth, but please don’t lie to me. There’s more going on to the situation than you’re telling me, isn’t there?”

I froze when I spotted Liam a couple of hundred feet away before I could respond to Sean. And I didn’t have to talk to Liam to know he might be disappointed with me. His lowered gaze revealed everything I needed to know.

“I should go.” I got up from the park bench, making sure to take the Apple Fritter with me. I’d have it for dessert later.
